Classic American Fare Served with an Elevated Twist
Tavern at Mission Farms is an American-style restaurant located in Mission Farms. It features a diverse menu with an elevated twist on American classics. Great salads, sandwiches and seafood including a fresh catch of the day, as well as the hand-cut steaks, pastas and brunch dishes are all prepared fresh and tweaked in such a way that makes them unique and delicious.
My favorite is the grilled vegetable salad. Grilling the marinated portabella, asparagus, Roma tomato, red pepper and zucchini makes this salad stand out among the ordinary salad fare you will find at most restaurants. The caramelization that happens by slightly charring the veggies intensifies the flavor and brings out their sweetness. Adding in the shaved Parmesan and rosemary basil vinaigrette that tops this salad completes the elevation.
The elevated sandwiches include a grilled cheese with four kinds of cheese, a burger topped with braised barbecue short ribs and tacos that get an element of freshness with a house-made chili lime slaw.
At brunch, you will find the classic eggs Benedict along with a twisted version called the farmers Benedict, which incorporates fresh biscuits and sausage gravy into the mix. There is also the caprese Benedict that incorporates fresh spinach and tomato. If you like oatmeal, try the cinnamon and sugar quinoa for a unique twist on the morning staple.
The space opened in Mission Farms in September 2012 and has the same owners as its sister restaurant Tavern in the Village, located in Prairie Village. I am a big fan of both of these spaces and frequent them often.
My most recent visit was for brunch after our daughter had just run a half-marathon with some friends. The server promptly brought out our made-to-order beignets and took great care of our little group of starving runners.
We made a reservation before going, and although the space was busy, it looked like there were still a few tables, so I don’t think walk-ins should have too long of a wait. If you are worried or going with a large group of nine or more, it is best to call ahead.
The atmosphere at Tavern at Mission Farms is beautiful from the moment you enter, starting with the ornate wooden doors. The bar is sleek with modern lighting, and the stone-rimmed fireplace is warm and inviting.
The large patio is perfect for enjoying one of Tavern at Mission Farms’ handcrafted classic cocktails like the blueberry cilantro margarita or my favorite, the lavender lemongrass drop. There is also a great happy hour menu that is full of $6 specials and runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to close every day.
Tavern at Mission Farms host events throughout the year including Brunch with Santa, the Masters Tournament watch party and a Kentucky Derby party that features delicious mint juleps along with an array of women donning fabulous hats. You can also catch them participating in KC Restaurant Week, which is held throughout the metro in January.
If you have not been to Tavern at Mission Farms, it is worth taking the time to do so. The diverse menu and beautiful atmosphere are perfect for groups, families or a date night.
