Destination Weddings Important questions to consider before calling a travel agent

Article — Lisa Harrison

According to recent surveys, 15 to 20 percent of couples who are planning a wedding in the next 18 months are considering a destination wedding—one where all family and guests will travel to a special location chosen by the bride and groom. It all sounds picture perfect…a wedding on the beach, at the top of a mountain, or at a century old European villa.

But before you choose that path, professional wedding planners suggest the bride and groom make an old-fashioned list of the pros and cons of a destination wedding. Pros might include the best wedding album imaginable, with scenic backdrops that cannot be duplicated in either the bride or groom’s hometown. Cons might include the financial barrier it might present for your family, friends, and the bridal party. While your list of pros might include limiting the guest list and not worrying about the complications that several blended families can demand, a downside might be that an aging grandparent is not comfortable making the trip.

Many couples feel they get around some of these difficult decisions by planning a large reception upon their return. This can indeed be the answer to many of their concerns. Communication with family and with each other is more important than ever when planning the big day. When that special day involves international or remote travel, it’s another conversation altogether. Talk it through as you start planning your special day.
